MAKATI CITY — At Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), the commitment to healing extends well beyond clinical care, encompassing a profound responsibility toward the environment. On June 2 and 3, 2026, the hospital hosted its annual eco-bazaar at Ledesma Hall on the 9th floor of Tower 1. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the venue served as a vibrant marketplace for sustainable living, inviting the community to shop mindfully, discover environmentally friendly products, and participate in a shared vision for a greener future. The event served as a practical reminder that small, intentional choices, such as opting for sustainable goods and reducing waste, are vital steps in ensuring a healthier planet for all.
Green Healthcare Beyond the Clinical Walls
The eco-bazaar is a visible manifestation of MakatiMed’s comprehensive sustainability framework, which is now deeply integrated into the hospital’s daily operations. Under the guidance of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Council, the institution has made significant strides in waste management. Recent initiatives have focused on circularity and responsible disposal, including the treatment of 756 kilograms of expired medications and e-waste through DENR-accredited facilities. Furthermore, the hospital achieved a 20% increase in waste diversion from landfills, successfully repurposing over 63 metric tons of waste. These efforts, ranging from partnerships with social enterprises like The Plastic Flamingo to specialized recycling drives for electronic and paper waste, demonstrate that environmental stewardship is a core pillar of the hospital’s mission.
Advocacy Through Education
MakatiMed’s dedication to sustainability also emphasizes the link between planetary health and human health. Through its ESG Webinar Series, the hospital has successfully engaged over 600 participants, including staff, partners, and community stakeholders, in critical dialogues regarding the health impacts of climate change. By fostering these discussions, MakatiMed reinforces the idea that environmental responsibility is a form of preventive medicine, essential to safeguarding the well-being of the community it serves.
A Community Invitation to a Sustainable Future
By opening its doors to the public for the annual eco-bazaar, MakatiMed encourages the community to transition from passive observers to active participants in sustainable living. The event provides a platform for visitors to support eco-conscious brands and reconsider their daily consumption habits, particularly regarding single-use plastics. As MakatiMed continues to expand its recycling initiatives and carbon-reduction strategies, the eco-bazaar stands as an invitation to the public to join the hospital in its pursuit of a cleaner, more sustainable healthcare landscape.
