ILOILO CITY — The Department of Social Welfare and Development has turned over ₱36,279,000 to the Iloilo City Government for the second quarter pension of indigent senior citizens. Regional Director Joselito G. Estember formally handed the check to Mayor Raisa Treñas yesterday, June 10, 2026. The funds will provide ₱3,000 each to 12,093 social pensioners across the city, helping address their daily needs and improve their quality of life.

The ceremonial turnover was witnessed by City Social Welfare and Development Officer Teresa Geologo, Executive Assistant Rosario San Agustin, City Legal Staff Sherwin Ross Silva, Social Pension Unit Head Marien Grace Tamonan, Social Welfare Assistant II Yvanne Gimeno, Regional Executive Assistant Irese Muyana, and Project Development Officer I Rachind P. Hernandez. The event highlighted the continued partnership between DSWD and the city government.

A Reliable Safety Net for the Elderly

The Social Pension Program for Indigent Senior Citizens is a national initiative that provides quarterly financial assistance to vulnerable elderly Filipinos. In Iloilo City, the program has become a dependable lifeline, ensuring that thousands of senior citizens have resources for food, medicine, and basic necessities. The turnover of ₱36.28 million for the second quarter demonstrates the government's commitment to consistent, timely support.

Mayor Treñas has consistently prioritized social protection as a core governance pillar. The city government has expanded social pension coverage and introduced additional quarterly aid for persons with disabilities and seniors. The DSWD partnership amplifies these local efforts, creating a multi‑layered safety net that catches those most at risk. For the 12,093 beneficiaries, the pension represents both material support and the dignity of being remembered by their community.

A Partnership Built on Compassionate Governance

The smooth turnover of funds reflects strong coordination between national and local agencies. DSWD relies on LGUs to identify eligible beneficiaries and facilitate distribution, while the city government ensures that the program reaches the most vulnerable residents. The presence of multiple city and regional officials at the ceremony signaled the importance both levels of government place on social welfare.

The Social Pension Program aligns with Iloilo City's broader push for inclusive development. Earlier this year, the city expanded its local social pension coverage and launched the Haplos medical assistance program with 10 hospitals. The consistent flow of support—from quarterly pensions to health access—strengthens the social fabric and enhances the city's reputation as one of the Philippines' most livable and caring urban centers.
