In a major win for wildlife conservation, the Davao City Council's Committee on Environment approved a proposal on May 10, 2026, to protect a massive forest tract in the Baguio District. The initiative aims to declare nearly 3,000 hectares in Barangay Tambobong as a "Critical Habitat" for the Philippine Eagle. This move underscores the city's commitment to protecting its biological treasures while respecting indigenous ancestral domains.

    Protecting the Apex Predator

The proposed area is a known nesting site for the Philippine Eagle, featuring intact forest ecosystems and high endemic species diversity. Recent confirmed sightings and nesting activities have made the declaration an urgent priority for conservationists. By establishing a Critical Habitat, the city provides a stronger legal framework to prevent illegal logging and habitat encroachment. This action is seen as a "bigger step" for long-term biodiversity preservation in the Davao Region.

A Partnership with the Obu Manuvu

The proposal is a joint effort between the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), the DENR, and the indigenous Obu Manuvu community. The area holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the tribe, who have served as the forest’s traditional guardians for centuries. By aligning city ordinances with ancestral domain rights, the government ensures that conservation efforts are socially inclusive. This synergy between indigenous knowledge and modern science is becoming a hallmark of Davao’s environmental policy.

    Strengthening the Green Corridor

Following the committee’s approval this week, the proposal will be forwarded to the plenary for adoption as a formal city ordinance. The Panigan-Tamugan Watershed is also a vital source of water for the city, making its protection a matter of public health as well as ecology. Once finalized, the ordinance will restrict certain human activities to ensure the eagle population can thrive undisturbed. This move reinforces Davao City’s reputation as a sanctuary where urban growth and wild nature can coexist.
