SURIGAO CITY — A total of 92 senior citizens in Surigao City received PHP10,000 each from the national government on June 30, 2026, under the Expanded Centenarians Act of 2023 (Republic Act No. 11982). The distribution was held at the Barangay Washington Function Room, organized by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) in partnership with the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC). The cash gift program is designed to provide financial support to senior citizens who reach specific milestone ages. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to honoring and supporting the elderly population.
A Program That Honors Milestone Ages
Under Republic Act No. 11982, senior citizens who reach the milestone ages of 80, 85, 90, and 95 receive a cash gift of PHP10,000. Those who reach 100 years old receive PHP100,000, expanding the original Centenarian Act which previously only recognized centenarians. The distribution on June 30 covered 92 beneficiaries across four age brackets. Of these, 53 were 80 years old, 26 were 85 years old, 17 were 90 years old, and two were 95 years old.
A Joint Effort by National and Local Government
The event was attended by representatives from the CSWDO and the NCSC Caraga Region. The program is a joint effort of the national and local governments to provide timely support to senior citizens. This collaboration allows seniors to enjoy government assistance while still active and healthy. The initiative reflects the government's commitment to promoting the welfare and dignity of senior citizens.
