SANTA RITA, PAMPANGA — The streets of Santa Rita came alive on May 20, 2026, as the Putiucan Festival returned with a vibrant celebration of faith, heritage, and community pride. Fifteen contingents from across the municipality competed in the much-anticipated street dance parade and interpretative dance showdown at the Santa Rita Plaza Covered Court and town proper .
The festival, held under the theme "Pamagpuge da reng Ritenian kang Apung Dita, Simbulu't Tetagan ning Bayung Santa Rita" (The homage of the people of Santa Rita to Apung Dita, the symbol and strength of the New Santa Rita), honored the town's patron saint, Santa Rita de Cascia, affectionately known as "Apung Dita" by Kapampangan devotees . The celebration coincided with the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Parish Church of Santa Rita, adding historical significance to the festivities.
Interpretative Dance Champion and Street Dance Winners Crowned
The competition featured a commanding performance by the Putiucan Dancers, who took home the Champion title in the Interpretative Dance Competition, along with the ₱35,000 grand prize . Tribu Magal-aw secured 1st Runner-Up with ₱20,000, while Riteñian Dancers claimed 2nd Runner-Up with ₱15,000. The street dance parade, which began at 3:30 PM, wound through Santa Rita's public places before culminating at the covered court for the evening showdown.
The festival offered substantial cash prizes designed to boost youth participation. Beyond the main competition awards, special prizes included ₱10,000 each for Best in Costume, Festival Queen, and Best in Head Dress . Organizers also provided subsidies to all participating groups, ensuring that financial barriers did not prevent any barangay from showcasing their talent.
Faith and Heritage at the Heart of the Celebration
Putiucan is an interpretative street dance dedicated to "Apung Dita," the Kapampangan term of endearment for Saint Rita of Cascia . The dance draws its symbolism from the saint's iconic attributes—particularly roses and bees, which appear in the choreography and costumes of competing contingents . According to local tradition, Saint Rita is often depicted with a rose and a beehive, representing her deep devotion and miraculous intercession.
The festival returned this year with renewed vigor under the leadership of Mayor Reynan S. Calo, who serves as this year's overall fiesta committee chair . The local government implemented traffic rerouting across key landmarks, including the Santa Rita de Cascia Parish and San Vicente Chapel, to ensure a safe and organized event for all residents and visitors . The celebration is part of a month-long series of activities leading to the feast day of Saint Rita de Cascia on May 22.
For Kapampangans, the Putiucan Festival is more than just a competition—it is a living expression of their deep-rooted Catholic faith and cultural identity. The event also aligned with Mayor Calo's vision of positioning Santa Rita as a recognized agritourism and heritage lifestyle hub, showcasing the town's potential as a destination for cultural tourism in Central Luzon.
