A young Kapampangan basketball sensation is trading his provincial jersey for the national colors. Chog Moral, the 17-year-old guard from Pampanga who took the internet by storm with his viral Palarong Pambansa highlights, has been selected for the Gilas Pilipinas Youth U18 Top 12 pool . The announcement was made by Pampanga Vice Governor Delta Pineda on May 23, 2026, confirming what many Kapampangan basketball fans had been hoping for.
The selection means Moral will skip the 2026 Palarong Pambansa in Agusan del Sur to focus on his training with the national team . But Vice Governor Pineda made it clear this is a move worth celebrating rather than mourning. “For the Philippines din po ito,” Pineda wrote in a social media post, emphasizing that wearing the Philippine flag on the international stage is the bigger opportunity for the young athlete.
A Viral Sensation Grows Up on the National Stage
Moral first caught the nation’s attention with his flashy handles and fearless drives during the 2024 and 2025 Palarong Pambansa. The 5-foot-11 guard became a social media fixture, with highlight reels racking up millions of views across TikTok and Facebook . But what makes his Gilas call-up special is the maturity he has shown in handling the transition from viral sensation to serious national team prospect.
His Gilas debut came during the 19th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on May 20, where he faced off against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons . In 17 minutes of action, Moral finished with five points, two assists, and five rebounds — modest numbers, but the experience was invaluable . “Sobrang excited ko. Makakalaban mo yung mga magagaling sa UAAP and NCAA. Yun yung magiging stepping stone ko sa aking career,” Moral said after the game .
From Palaro Standout to International Contender
The transition from provincial basketball to the structured system of national team play has required adjustment. Moral himself acknowledged the difference: “Siguro yung laro dito sa Manila is ma-system. Yun talaga yung binubuild dito, especially sa time ko sa Gilas. Sa province naman, kailangan maging kumpiyansa ka sa sarili mo” . Yet the young guard is embracing the challenge, adding that he continues to stay humble and trust God as he works toward bigger dreams .
The Gilas Youth U18 squad, coached by Juno Sauler, is preparing for the FIBA U18 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers in Krabi, Thailand, this June . A successful campaign there would send the team to the FIBA U18 Asia Cup in Qatar come September . Moral’s inclusion in the Top 12 pool is a testament to his rapid development and the belief that Sauler and the coaching staff have in the Kapampangan standout.
Pampanga Proud, Even Without Its Star at Palaro
Despite Moral’s absence, Vice Governor Pineda assured that the Pampanga delegation remains determined to perform well at the Palarong Pambansa . But for the province as a whole, seeing one of their own rise to the national team is a victory in itself. “Sana palarin na makapaglaro sa Gilas Youth,” Moral said before his call-up was confirmed. “Lalo ko pang ini-improve sarili ko para makapaglaro dito” .
Now that dream has become reality. And for every young basketball player in Pampanga watching from their barangay court, Chog Moral’s journey is proof that talent, hard work, and humility can take you from the provinces all the way to the national stage — with the Philippine flag on your chest.
