MAKATI CITY — Tucked inside The Atrium of Makati along Makati Avenue, a creative haven has been quietly nurturing the artistic spirit of the city. Common Room PH is not just an art cafe or a studio, it's a collaborative community hub where local artists, makers, and crafters converge to shop, sip, and get inspired. Since opening its doors in 2015, the space has grown into a shared home for over 200 local brands, offering a multitude of handmade creative curiosities for treasure hunters and craft collectors alike. The Atrium of Makati branch, known as the Mess Studio, opened in August 2023 in time for the brand's anniversary, representing a bold new experimental direction for the established community.
A Space Designed for Making and Mingling
Step into the Mess Studio, and you are immediately greeted by a spacious, industrial interior that feels both raw and inviting. The yellow-toned interiors, scattered books for browsing, and a coffee bar from Convenience Coffeehouse create a vibe that is equal parts coffee shop and craft studio. Outside, a signboard displays words like "magkalat," "mamili," "magbasa," and "magkape" in bold Quiapo font, summarizing the new store's experience. The 300-square-meter space is divided into distinct areas: a retail section stocked with Filipino-made products, and the craft area where the real magic happens.
A Hub for Workshops and Community Events
Regular workshops and community events make Common Room PH a perfect spot for artistic souls to connect. The craft area features long tables with mismatched secondhand chairs, offering a space to get messy and unplug. Upcycling projects are available with the purchase of a Craft Pass (PHP499 for a single craft or PHP799 for a bundle). Guests can also enjoy the workspace with a Seat Pass (PHP299 per head for a day session). There's even a kid's room with books and art materials for families. The space encourages mindful crafting using only donated scrap materials, a practice aligned with the founders' vision of responsible and sustainable creativity.
Supporting Local Makers and Artists
Common Room PH has become a vital platform for Filipino creatives. Around 40 to 50 percent of the featured makers at the Mess Studio are new, having never been in any other stores before. The founders' pride in the space is evident: "This is a very experimental space for us. All our other branches focus on retail, but we've long wanted a space like this," co-founder Maan Agsalud said. The result is a place where the community can find joy in working with their hands, support local talent, and connect with like-minded individuals.
