Davao — The Davao Region delivered an electrifying performance at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, securing a hard-fought third-place overall finish after a dramatic late-game surge. After hovering in the lower half of the standings for much of the week-long competition, the Davao Eagles rallied on the final day, transforming their trajectory to claim a podium spot with a final medal haul of 34 golds, 32 silvers, and 34 bronzes. This achievement marks a significant improvement from their fourth-place finish in the previous year and underscores the region's rising status in the national sports landscape.
A Dominant Final-Day Performance
The Eagles' ascent was defined by a stunning turnaround on Saturday, where gold medals poured in across multiple disciplines, allowing them to leapfrog several competing regions. While the National Capital Region maintained its perennial top position and Calabarzon secured second, the Davao Region's elementary athletes played a pivotal role in the climb, contributing a remarkable 21 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze medals. Department of Education Davao regional director Allan Farnazo praised the athletes for their discipline and talent, noting that the performance reflects the success of the region's sports development systems.
Key Highlights and Standout Disciplines
Dancesport continued to be a cornerstone of Davao’s success, with the elementary team delivering a massive contribution of 12 gold medals. Notably, Yanie Mae Chan and Eliju Joseph Darvin of F. Bustamante Central Elementary School dominated the standard division, sweeping six gold medals in events ranging from the tango to the slow waltz. Beyond dancesport, the region celebrated a historic breakthrough in swimming, with Maquiling securing a gold in the elementary boys' 50-meter breaststroke, a significant improvement after the region missed out on swimming golds the previous year. Other notable golden performances included Christy Mel Rose Siva in the girls' 400-meter hurdles, Lys Jane Timbal in the 2,000-meter walk, and victories in chess, boxing, and pencak silat.
Reflecting on a Successful Campaign
Despite a few "painful losses," including the secondary boys' basketball team's unsuccessful title defense, the overall third-place finish is viewed as a major victory and a sign of Mindanao's growing competitiveness in national sports. Director Farnazo highlighted that the results were a culmination of collective effort from schools, local government units, coaches, and parents. The 2026 Palarong Pambansa has reinforced the idea that regions outside the traditional Luzon and Visayas powerhouses are increasingly capable of challenging for the top ranks. As the games concluded, the Eagles returned home not just with medals, but with a confirmed reputation as a premier force in Philippine youth athletics.
