BUTUAN CITY — The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will reopen its Butuan Extension Office on June 22, restoring walk-in services for the Caraga region. The reopening follows a notice issued on June 18 and ensures uninterrupted delivery of services to entrepreneurs, corporations, and other stakeholders despite an ongoing investigation involving the office's director. Services available to the public include assistance in online company registration, initial review of documents for submission through the Electronic Application for Modification of Entity Data (eAMEND) Portal, and the receipt of letters and complaints.
Why the Reopening Matters for Local Entrepreneurs
For startups and small businesses in Butuan and the wider Caraga region, the SEC office is a critical gateway to formalizing operations. The reopening will enable companies and prospective registrants to continue accessing regulatory services without delays, supporting business activity and compliance requirements. SEC Chairperson Francis Lim emphasized that "reopening the Butuan EO ensures that recent internal disruptions will not affect local entrepreneurs and businesses, who are vital to the growth of our economy". The Commission also reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal controls and procedures across its offices nationwide to help ensure seamless and corruption-free transactions.
A Boost for Ease of Doing Business
The SEC's return is a win for the city's ease of doing business. By restoring walk-in services, the office eliminates the need for entrepreneurs to travel to other regions for regulatory compliance. This is particularly significant for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the local economy. With the SEC actively coordinating with law enforcement agencies in connection with the case involving the office's director, the Commission has underscored its commitment to accountability and the rule of law. The reopening reflects a balanced approach: maintaining public service while upholding institutional integrity.
A Stronger Business Environment for Caraga
The reopening of the Butuan Extension Office is more than an administrative update—it is a signal of stability for the region's business community. As the SEC continues to foster a robust and transparent business environment in Caraga, local entrepreneurs can look forward to smoother transactions and greater regulatory support. For Butuan's growing startup ecosystem and established SMEs alike, the SEC's return means fewer barriers, faster compliance, and a clearer path to growth.
