DUMAGUETE CITY — Famous for its hospitality and charm, the Dumaguete City has once again found itself in the limelight after being declared as the safest city in the Philippines to visit in 2026. The World Travel Index stated that the city, fondly called the “City of Gentle People,” received an 82.28% safety ranking, the highest in the Philippines.

A Landmark 2026 Safety Ranking

The World Travel Index analyzes over 4,000 cities across the globe. In its ratings, the index relies on an algorithm that includes such aspects as crime rates, police presence, efficiency of safety regulations, and community involvement. As such, Dumaguete has proven to be one of the highest scoring destinations, indicating how safe it can be for tourists and residents alike. As per the research, Dumaguete is “very safe,” with travelers and local population feeling “completely safe” throughout the daytime, and “relatively safe” at nighttime. In terms of ranking within the Philippines, Davao and Balanga cities come second and third respectively.

Local Efforts Driving the Recognition

The award received in 2026 signifies the continuous commitment shown by the city government. At the forefront of these efforts is the mayor of the city, Mr. Felipe Antonio Remollo. As the chairperson of the City Peace and Order Council, he has ensured that there has been proper funding for the security forces, namely the Dumaguete City Police force, along with promoting volunteerism to counter criminal activities. The award also signifies the successful cooperation of citizens in various safety campaigns run in the city. It is these elements that contribute to the city’s burgeoning image as an investor-friendly and tourist-friendly destination.

A Boon for Tourism and Real Estate

The increasing security rating has been playing a vital role in enhancing the attractiveness of Dumaguete, thus making an important contribution to the impressive increase in tourist interest. Specifically, the number of tourists visiting Negros Oriental province reached the mark of 954,344, bringing revenues totaling P13.3 billion. Such positive dynamics are expected to continue in 2026, as per the Coast Guard prediction of continuing traveler influx through the port of Dumaguete City. The real estate sector is booming in turn, with the average cost of property in Dumaguete being about ₱71,500 per square meter.

For travelers and investors alike, Dumaguete's 2026 recognition as the nation's safest city makes it an increasingly attractive and secure choice.
