Davao — In a major shift for the energy sector, Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. (Davao Light) officially took over electricity distribution services in Tagum City and three surrounding municipalities. This change follows a legal transition mandated by Republic Act No. 12144, which expands the company's service area into new parts of Davao del Norte. Residents in Tagum, Kapalong, New Corella, and Talaingod are now served by the new provider, which has taken control of all operation, maintenance, and billing functions. The transition aims to stabilize grid reliability in these high-growth areas, with officials emphasizing their focus on ensuring that the shift happens without disrupting power for homes or businesses.
Ensuring a Seamless Transition for Local Consumers
The move represents the culmination of a legal process that affirmed Davao Light’s mandate to serve these specific areas, replacing the previous cooperative-based distribution system. To make the shift as smooth as possible, the company has deployed technical teams to manage the handover of infrastructure assets and customer service databases. Customers are advised that starting from May 26, their energy usage will be billed directly by the new provider, with new service applications now channeled through their offices. The company has publicly called for cooperation from all stakeholders to guarantee that public services, such as hospitals and schools, remain powered throughout the handover.
Powering Long-Term Economic Growth
By modernizing the grid in these essential municipalities, the expansion is expected to provide the consistent energy supply required to attract larger industrial and commercial investments. Reliable electricity is the bedrock of development in Tagum City, which serves as a major agricultural and commercial center for the surrounding northern region. As businesses experience fewer interruptions and more consistent voltage, the hope is that new companies will feel more confident about setting up shop in the area. This utility upgrade acts as a foundational investment in the province’s future, creating a more stable climate for entrepreneurs and home builders alike.
Commitment to Grid Stability and Service Quality
Looking ahead, the new provider has signaled its intent to perform a thorough audit of the distribution system to address any aging or inefficient equipment inherited during the takeover. The focus is on implementing higher standards for maintenance and rapid response, which are critical for an area that experiences significant fluctuations in electricity demand. Local government units are watching the process closely, as the success of this transition is directly linked to the satisfaction of their constituents and the success of local businesses. The goal is to set a new benchmark for utility service in the region, proving that large-scale infrastructure integration can be executed effectively and safely.
