DAVAO CITY — A modern sanitary landfill is set to open on June 16, 2026, in Barangay New Carmen, Tugbok District, promising a cleaner and more efficient waste management system for the city's nearly two million residents. The facility has been under construction since 2024 and will replace the older landfill adjacent to it. The Environmental Compliance Certificate has already been secured.
Mayor Sebastian Duterte confirmed the June 16 target, noting that ongoing works include concrete pouring at the unloading bay, installation of a high‑density polyethylene liner, benching of the landfill cell, and site grading. These engineering measures ensure the facility meets modern environmental and safety standards. Once operational, it will handle approximately 750 tons of waste daily.
A Long‑Term Solution for a Growing City
The new landfill represents a significant upgrade in Davao's solid waste infrastructure. Designed with geoliners, leachate management, and slope stabilization, it addresses the limitations of older disposal methods. The facility forms part of a broader waste‑management allocation aimed at improving public health and environmental conditions across the city.
For Davao, which continues to expand as a regional economic hub, reliable waste disposal is essential to sustaining growth. The landfill's opening will support the city's residential and commercial development by ensuring that basic sanitation keeps pace with urbanization. Clean, well‑managed communities are fundamental to maintaining property values and attracting investment.
Collaboration Ensures Compliance
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has conducted daily site inspections to verify compliance with Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. The City Engineer's Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office have coordinated closely with DENR to meet all safety requirements before operations begin.
This collaborative approach has ensured that the new facility is built to higher standards than its predecessor. The DENR has confirmed that slope‑stabilization, drainage, and engineering interventions were completed as required. Workers have been cleared from the perimeter, and all necessary permits are in place.
A Cleaner, Healthier Davao
For Davaoeños, the new sanitary landfill means a more sanitary and environmentally responsible approach to waste. The facility's design minimizes risks associated with older dumpsites while maximizing operational efficiency. It represents the city's commitment to sustainable urban management.
The opening on June 16 will mark a new chapter in Davao's waste management history, providing a foundation for continued growth and improved quality of life for all residents.
