CEBU CITY — The Cebu Provincial Government will hold its inaugural Governor’s Zero Hunger Run on Aug. 2, 2026, drawing an expected 2,500 runners to the Capitol grounds. The event combines fitness, local culture, and a strong charitable mission to fund grassroots sports programs.
A Race with a Heart
The run is a highlight of Cebu’s 457th founding anniversary and supports the province’s fight against hunger. All proceeds will be channeled through the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) to finance sports development initiatives. Officials stressed that every peso will be accounted for, with Commissioner Chad Salimbangon promising transparency and accountability.
Beyond the cause, participants can choose from five distance categories: 1K, 3K, 6K, 12K, and 21K. Registration fees range from ₱600 for the 1K fun run to ₱1,600 for the half marathon. The inclusive lineup ensures that casual joggers and elite athletes alike can take part.
Prizes, Perks, and a Festive Finish
Top finishers in the competitive distances will receive cash prizes, with champions of the 21K earning ₱20,000. Awards extend to the fifth place in most categories, spreading recognition widely. Raffle prizes including a motorcycle, laptops, smartphones, and refrigerators will also be drawn, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Every runner will enjoy a substantial post‑race meal, embodying the “Zero Hunger” theme. Project chairman Salimbangon assured that no one would leave hungry, as the governor wanted a truly satisfying experience. The finish line area will feel more like a community feast than a typical race.
Running Through Culture and Heritage
Hydration stations along the route will double as mini tourism exhibits. Tarpaulins will showcase traditional Cebuano delicacies such as budbud, bibingka, and bukayo, alongside photos of local tourist attractions. Runners will get a taste of Cebu’s culinary and cultural richness while they push through the course.
This creative integration turns the race into a moving tour of the province’s heritage. Organizers hope it will inspire participants to explore the featured towns after the event. The approach transforms a simple footrace into a celebration of Cebuano identity.
Transparent Fundraising for Grassroots Sports
The Governor’s Zero Hunger Run marks the official revival of the CPSC, which has been reactivated after years of dormancy. The provincial government recently allocated ₱50 million to the commission to develop grassroots programs and identify young talent. The race proceeds will directly support these efforts.
CPSC Chairman Dr. Rhoel Dejano emphasized the goal of involving out‑of‑school youth in training programs and promoting physical activity as preventive medicine. The commission also plans to install exercise equipment in public spaces across Cebu’s towns and cities. The run is just the beginning of a broader wellness movement.
A Governor on the Starting Line
Governor Pamela Baricuatro will not merely fire the starting gun. She plans to lace up her shoes and run, likely in the 3K category. Her participation underscores the personal commitment behind the event and encourages more Cebuanos to join. The image of the governor running alongside her constituents adds a powerful, relatable touch to the day.
The race director and technical head, Dwight Velasco, has designed the course to be both challenging and enjoyable. Safety measures, medical teams, and ample water stations will ensure a smooth event. Registration is open until July 2, with online sign‑up available through the official portal.
