Surigao City serves as the gateway to three eco‑adventures in 2026: Mabua Pebble Beach's unique stone shoreline, Sohoton Cove's caves and stingless jellyfish sanctuary in Socorro, and Day‑asan Floating Village's stilt houses and mangroves. Each destination provides a distinct experience for nature lovers.

SURIGAO CITY — Known as the "City of Island Adventures," Surigao City serves as the capital of Surigao del Norte and the primary jump‑off gateway to some of the Philippines' most stunning natural attractions. From unique pebble shorelines to mystical cave systems and floating villages, the city and its surrounding areas offer a refreshing alternative to typical tourist‑packed destinations. Whether travelers seek adventure, tranquility, or cultural immersion, Surigao City delivers access to eco‑experiences that linger long after the journey ends.

Mabua Pebble Beach: A Shoreline Unlike Any Other

Located just a short distance from the city center, Mabua Pebble Beach stands out from other Philippine beaches thanks to its abundance of smooth, fine white pebbles that make up the entire shoreline. Unlike traditional sandy beaches, each stone here varies in size and form, creating a textured landscape that is both visually striking and therapeutic. Walking barefoot across the pebbles is believed to have restorative effects on the body, as certain areas of the feet correspond to internal organs. Visitors can also climb a rock formation on the right side of the beach, though caution is advised as some edges can be slick. The waters are crystal clear, especially during summer, and the surrounding coconut trees and gentle sea breeze create an atmosphere of pure relaxation. The beach is open to the public year‑round and is a favorite spot for sunset photography and quiet coastal walks.

Sohoton Cove: Caves, Lagoons, and Stingless Jellyfish

Situated on Bucas Grande Island in the neighboring municipality of Socorro, Sohoton Cove is a breathtaking destination accessible via boat from mainland Surigao ports. This natural wonder features stunning limestone formations, hidden lagoons, and enchanting caves such as Hagukan Cave, also known as the Snoring Cave for the sound the water makes as it moves through the cavern. Visitors can paddle through the turquoise waters of Blue Lagoon, explore Crystal Cave, and experience the unique, serene encounter of floating alongside thousands of rare, stingless jellyfish in their protected sanctuary. The best time to observe the jellies is from March through June. Other activities include cliff jumping and cave swimming, making Sohoton Cove a must‑visit for adventure seekers. Tour guides are available to assist visitors throughout the experience.

Day‑asan Floating Village: Surigao's Little Venice

About nine kilometers from the busy city center lies Day‑asan Floating Village, a coastal community often called the "Little Venice of Surigao". Here, approximately 400 wooden houses are built on stilts above the water, interconnected by footbridges and nestled within a vast mangrove forest. The village is home to around 1,800 residents whose livelihoods depend on fishing and wood gathering, living in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem. Visitors can take a pump boat ride through the winding waterways, gliding past stilt houses and thriving mangroves while observing local life up close. The waters are clean and teeming with marine life, including shellfish and lobster. Affordable tour rates make this an excellent option for families and groups seeking an authentic cultural experience away from crowded tourist zones.
