The Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort served as one of five official billeting sites for the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu this May, hosting heads of state and delegates during the two-day high-level meetings. The resort, owned by AppleOne Group, utilized its extensive MICE facilities including a pillarless ballroom and eight event spaces to accommodate the diplomatic gathering. Its management credited the success to its associates' dedication and the warmth of Filipino hospitality.

LAPU-LAPU CITY, CEBU — In early May 2026, as convoys swept through the coastal roads of Mactan Island and the flags of eleven nations lined the newly opened Mactan Expo, a profound sense of occasion settled over one of Cebu's premier luxury resorts. The Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort, a sprawling 11-hectare beachfront property owned and developed by AppleOne Group, was selected as one of five official billeting sites for the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, hosting heads of state, delegates, and distinguished guests for a series of high-level discussions that would help shape the region's shared future. For the resort, the event represented more than just a logistical feat; it was a defining moment that placed its blend of global sophistication and deep-rooted Filipino hospitality at the very center of international diplomacy.

The summit, held from May 7 to 8, 2026, was the first of its scale to be concentrated in Lapu-Lapu City, with the main sessions taking place at the newly constructed Mactan Expo in Mactan Newtown. Alongside Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa, Dusit Thani Mactan Cebu Resort, JPark Island Resort and Waterpark, and Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan, the Sheraton was tasked with accommodating the influx of leaders and their delegations. The city's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office confirmed that all visiting heads of state would be staying within Lapu-Lapu City, a concentration of diplomatic prestige that transformed the Mactan coast into a temporary nexus of regional power.

A Gathering Space Engineered for 'The World's Gathering Place'

The resort's readiness to host an event of this magnitude was not accidental. The property, which opened its doors to international acclaim, features 261 luxurious rooms and suites that are among the largest on the island, each with balconies that open to views of the sea or its meticulously landscaped gardens. To meet the complex demands of a summit, the resort offers a robust Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) infrastructure comprising eight distinct event spaces totaling 1,412 square meters. These include a pillarless grand ballroom capable of hosting 450-person conferences, a boardroom, an outdoor beachfront area, and a pre-function room, all equipped with state-of-the-art LED walls and modern conferencing technology.

Beyond the physical spaces, the resort's General Manager, Dottie Wügler-Cronin, had previously articulated a vision for the property as a hub for meaningful communal gatherings, a philosophy that aligns seamlessly with the summit's theme, "Navigating Our Future, Together." The resort's "Gatherings by Sheraton" platform, designed to elevate the brand's positioning as "The World's Gathering Place," found its ultimate expression during those two days in May, as bilateral meetings and strategic dialogues unfolded within its walls. The hosting duty also spotlighted the beachfront venue's full suite of amenities—from the Sheraton Spa, the first of its kind in the Philippines offering fully customized treatments, to a lagoon-inspired pool and a pristine white-sand beach—that provided a serene counterbalance to the high-stakes diplomacy.

Filipino Warmth on the Global Stage

In a Facebook post following the summit, the Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort expressed deep honor at having been part of the historic gathering, emphasizing that the achievement would not have been possible without the "unwavering dedication, passion, and hard work of our associates, whose commitment to excellence and genuine hospitality made every experience seamless and memorable." The post further noted that the associates' efforts "truly reflect the heart of Sheraton and the warmth of Filipino hospitality on the global stage." This sentiment echoes the resort's long-standing philosophy of localizing its global brand. The management has consistently emphasized that while Sheraton, a Marriott Bonvoy brand, adheres to a rigorous international standard, it is the infusion of local culture and the warmth of Cebuano service that gives the property its distinctive soul.

The summit also placed a brighter spotlight on the resort's unique attributes that have drawn international recognition. Prior to the ASEAN event, the resort and its signature restaurant, DIP Nikkei, were honored with dual recognition from the Michelin Guide upon its debut in the Philippines. The Michelin Guide describes the property as "the perfect base for exploring Cebu's beaches and cultural sites," a testament to its blend of contemporary coastal luxury, expansive design, and authentic Filipino character. The resort, just a 30-minute drive from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, has thus established itself not merely as a stopover but as a destination in its own right—one that is as comfortable serving a meticulously crafted ceviche hiramasa to global connoisseurs as it is hosting the intricate protocols of a summit of state leaders.
