ILOILO CITY — Journalists and delegates from four countries walked into one of Iloilo City's Cooling Hubs on May 30, 2026, not to escape the heat but to study how a local government confronts it. The visit was part of the Terra Asia Media Field Lab, organized by West Visayas State University with Canal France International and the Asia‑Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development. The program brought together media practitioners from the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji to strengthen environmental reporting.

General Services Office head Engr. Neil Ravena guided the delegation through the city's climate‑responsive infrastructure. The Cooling Hub, which provides free air‑conditioned relief during extreme heat, served as the primary exhibit. Ravena explained that the hubs are immediate, short‑term interventions, while the city simultaneously pursues long‑term solutions through mangrove conservation, community‑led ecosystem restoration, and nature‑based urban development. The visit underscored Iloilo's selection as the program's primary case study.

From Cooling Hubs to a "Tiangge sa Basura"

The delegation also visited the "Tiangge sa Basura" at the GSO‑IEC Office in Fort San Pedro. The innovative program allows residents to exchange collected recyclable waste for basic grocery items, promoting proper waste segregation while encouraging community participation. The model links environmental responsibility to tangible household benefits.

For Iloilo's tourism sector, the media visit functions as unpaid global promotion. Journalists from across the Asia‑Pacific will return home with footage and stories of a Philippine city that treats climate resilience as a governance priority. The Cooling Hubs and the waste‑to‑groceries program are inherently visual and replicable, making them ideal subjects for environmental journalism. The international delegation's presence confirms what Iloilo has long argued: that its sustainability initiatives are not merely local projects but models for the region.

A City That Earns Its Global Reputation

The Terra Asia visit arrives as Iloilo's portfolio of international recognitions deepens. The city holds two ASEAN Clean Tourist City awards, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation, and a UNEP Role Model City citation for mangrove restoration. Each credential reinforces Iloilo's appeal to eco‑conscious travelers and event organizers.

The Cooling Hubs and the Tiangge sa Basura also enhance the visitor experience. Tourists walking the Esplanade or exploring the Terminal Market benefit from the same heat relief and clean streets that the international delegates observed. For the city, the media visit was both a recognition and a platform—one that broadcasts Iloilo's climate solutions to audiences far beyond its borders.
