HAGONOY, DAVAO DEL SUR — The Municipality of Hagonoy marked its 73rd Araw ng Hagonoy on July 5, 2026, with a celebration rooted in pride, progress, and unity. Residents, local officials, and provincial leaders gathered to honor the town’s transformation from a modest settlement into a resilient agricultural community.

Provincial Leaders Join the Festivities

Governor Yvonne Cagas and Vice Governor Marc Cagas graced the anniversary rites, reinforcing the strong ties between the municipal and provincial governments. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to supporting Hagonoy’s development priorities and ensuring that public service reaches every barangay.

The provincial executives commended the local leadership for sustaining programs that enhance livelihoods and maintain peace. Governor Cagas noted that Hagonoy’s steady growth contributes directly to Davao del Sur’s overall progress, making the town a valuable partner in regional advancement.

A Journey from Sitio to Independent Municipality

Hagonoy’s story began as a small sitio of Barrio Digos under Santa Cruz. It later became a barrio of Padada after that town’s creation in 1949. The settlement’s distinct identity and growing population eventually merited full municipal status through Executive Order No. 596, signed by President Elpidio Quirino on May 28, 1953.

The July 5 date holds special significance because it marks the assumption of office by the first set of appointed municipal officials in 1959. This followed boundary ratifications under Republic Act No. 2094, which formalized Hagonoy’s territory and set the foundation for its 21 barangays today.

Peace and Agriculture Anchor the Future

Municipal officials used the anniversary to highlight the town’s role in maintaining Davao del Sur’s status as an insurgency-free province. The peaceful environment has encouraged investments in agriculture and trade, allowing over 58,000 residents to pursue farming, fishing, and small enterprises without fear of conflict.

Speakers emphasized that agricultural modernization and peace go hand in hand. By protecting the countryside from instability, Hagonoy safeguards food production and creates an atmosphere where families can build secure, prosperous futures anchored on the town’s rich soil and coastal resources.

A Timely Provincial Milestone

Hagonoy’s celebration arrived just days after Davao del Sur observed its 59th founding anniversary on July 1, 2026. The back-to-back milestones underscored a synchronized development vision: as municipalities grow stronger, the entire province rises. Leaders used both events to reaffirm pledges of inclusive governance and transparency.

The anniversary theme, “Celebrating 73 Years of Pride, Progress, and Unity!”, resonated through cultural presentations and civic ceremonies. From a quiet riverside sitio to a thriving municipality, Hagonoy’s journey reflects the enduring spirit of community that continues to shape its identity.
