SURIGAO CITY — Just minutes away from the bustling city proper lies Basul Island, a tropical haven that offers visitors a peaceful retreat without the need for a long journey. Located just a short boat ride from Surigao City, this small island is characterized by a long stretch of fine white or light-brown sand, lined with coconut trees and dotted with assorted shell fragments. It remains refreshingly underdeveloped compared to more commercialized destinations, making it a perfect spot for those seeking serenity and nature‘s simplicity.

A Peaceful Escape Close to the City

The island’s main draw is its clear, alluring waters, which make it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can marvel at vibrant coral reefs and encounter diverse marine creatures just beneath the surface. One reviewer described the experience: “Swimming is a delight, clean, clear water”. The island also offers stunning views of Surigao City from its shores, and its white sand beaches provide a breathtaking backdrop for sunset viewing.

Beyond the water, visitors can explore the island‘s lush greenery and relax in its tranquil atmosphere. The island has a rating of 4.3 out of 5 based on visitor reviews, with many appreciating its proximity to the city and the peaceful escape it offers.

What to Know Before You Go

Basul Island is a private island, so access requires prior arrangements. Visitors need to book their visit in advance. As an underdeveloped island, there are no stores on-site, so visitors should bring their own food, water, and other essentials. There are open-air cottages available for rent. It is recommended to wear aqua shoes or slippers when walking along the shore due to larger pebbles.

How to Get There

Basul Island is easily accessible from Surigao City‘s port via a 14- to 30-minute motorized boat ride. Visitors can rent a motorized banca (outrigger boat) at the city port. The boat ride across the Surigao Strait can sometimes be a little rough, but local boat owners are experienced fishermen who know the sea.
