The Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, stands as a powerful symbol of the Filipino people's struggle for independence. This meticulously preserved ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines, was the site of the historic proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. Visitors can explore the shrine for free and immerse themselves in a rich collection of artifacts, personal belongings, and period furnishings that offer a glimpse into the life of General Aguinaldo and the revolutionary era.

The History and Highlights of the Shrine

The story of the shrine begins in 1845 as a simple house made of wood and thatch, the birthplace of Emilio Aguinaldo on March 22, 1869 . The house was reconstructed in 1849 and underwent a major renovation in the 1920s, led by Aguinaldo himself, transforming it into the mansion we see today, complete with its iconic five-story tower and a symbolic balcony added to commemorate the independence proclamation . In 1964, a year after Aguinaldo donated the house to the nation, it was declared a national shrine by virtue of Republic Act 4039 .

One of the most significant features is the "Independence Balcony," the site from which the Philippine Declaration of Independence was read, and the flag was unfurled in 1898 . Inside, the house is a museum filled with historical treasures. The ground floor is dedicated to exhibits on the Philippine Revolution and Cavite's role in it, while the second floor is the preserved living space of the Aguinaldo family, featuring 19th-century furniture, paintings, and secret passages once used to hide documents and weapons . Among the unique details are a bas-relief map of the Philippines on the dining room ceiling and a hidden trapdoor.

Plan Your Visit to the Shrine

The Aguinaldo Shrine is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Philippine history. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please note that it is closed on Mondays .

Visitors are welcome to explore the museum with the assistance of knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the historic sections of the house . The shrine is easily accessible from Manila by private car or public transport, located along Tirona Highway in Kawit, Cavite .
