DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur — The 59th Araw ng Davao del Sur celebration reached its climax on July 1, 2026, with a grand motorcade and culminating program that honored homegrown sports icons and showcased the province’s vibrant culture. The event served as a powerful invitation for travelers to explore the heart of the southern Philippines.

A Motorcade of Unity and Pride

The day began at dawn as a colorful motorcade rolled out from Phoenix Balutakay, winding through towns before converging at the Tablizo Gymnasium on the Capitol grounds. Dozens of vehicles, adorned with provincial flags and streamers, drew cheers from residents who lined the streets. The procession transformed a routine morning into a moving celebration of Davao del Sur’s identity.

Local government units, civic organizations, and community groups participated, each adding a distinct local flavor to the convoy. Banners declared each municipality’s unique attractions, from pristine beaches to mountain eco‑parks. For visitors, the motorcade was a living itinerary, hinting at the diverse destinations waiting to be explored.

Honoring Homegrown Sports Icons

A highlight of the culminating program was the welcome‑home recognition for PBA superstars Scottie Thompson and Nards Pinto. The two Barangay Ginebra San Miguel players, fresh from their recent Commissioner’s Cup championship triumph, were cheered by a packed gymnasium as they received provincial honors. Thompson, accompanied by his wife Jinky, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.

The moment electrified the crowd, bridging the gap between national sports glory and local pride. Their journey from provincial courts to the professional league inspires young athletes across Davao del Sur. By celebrating their achievements, the province showcases its role in nurturing world‑class talent, adding a human dimension to its tourism appeal.

A Festival Steeped in History and Culture

The Araw ng Davao del Sur marks the province’s creation under Republic Act No. 4867, which carved it out of the old Davao province in May 1967. July 1, a public holiday under Republic Act No. 6380, serves as a focal point for honoring the region’s legacy. Governor Yvonne Roña Cagas and Vice Governor Marc Cagas led the culmination, emphasizing unity and resilience.

The celebration seamlessly blends solemn thanksgiving and vibrant festivity. A thanksgiving mass on June 30 set a reflective tone, while the traditional Dugsu Sandwa Festival showcased indigenous dances and music. For tourists, these rituals offer an authentic glimpse into the living heritage of the province’s communities.

Economic and Tourism Highlights

Beyond the ceremonies, the Araw festivities included a job fair, the Agrinex agri‑trade and investment expo, and a series of sports events. The expo, held at Gaisano Mall of Digos, spotlighted local produce and investment opportunities, drawing entrepreneurs and curious visitors alike. A 4:00 AM community fun run and an enduro bike competition scheduled for July 12 add adventure to the lineup.

These events demonstrate that Davao del Sur is more than a scenic destination; it is a dynamic hub of commerce and active living. The province’s ability to merge economic development with cultural celebration creates a unique travel experience. Visitors can return home with not just memories but also business ideas and new connections.

An Invitation to Discover Davao del Sur

As the 59th Araw concluded, the message was clear: Davao del Sur is ready to welcome the world. From the motorcade’s parade of municipal treasures to the heroes’ welcome for its sports legends, every moment served as an open invitation. The celebration proved that the province’s greatest asset is its people and their stories.

Planners are already looking ahead to next year’s milestone 60th anniversary, promising an even grander showcase. For now, travelers are encouraged to explore the province’s beaches, highlands, and heritage sites. Davao del Sur’s journey is far from over, and there is no better time to be part of it.
