DAVAO CITY — Davao’s tourism engine accelerated powerfully in early 2026, posting a 19 percent increase in arrivals from January to March compared to the same period last year. The city welcomed 525,342 visitors in the first quarter, with the momentum continuing into April despite external headwinds.

Record Arrivals Drive Momentum

The surge was primarily powered by domestic travelers, who accounted for 647,258 of the 687,964 total arrivals recorded between January and April. Foreign tourists numbered 30,937, while 8,769 overseas Filipinos added depth to the visitor mix. This composition underscores Davao’s strong reliance on internal mobility and returning diaspora travel.

April alone saw 161,532 arrivals, a 6.37 percent increase over April 2025. Analysts had braced for a potential contraction due to oil price volatility from Middle East tensions, but the city still posted positive growth. The sustained performance reveals a tourism sector capable of absorbing shocks and maintaining an upward trajectory.

MICE Sector Anchors Resilience

Meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) have become a cornerstone of Davao’s tourism strategy. Hosting business events and conventions has boosted hotel occupancy and visitor spending, creating a stable demand base that complements leisure travel. The city’s improved infrastructure readiness has made it a competitive destination for corporate gatherings.

This diversification shields the local economy from seasonal fluctuations. When holiday travel dips, conference delegates fill rooms and restaurants. Davao’s reputation for safety and affordability, reflected in its top score of 75.66 in the April 2026 World Travel Index, further reassures event organizers and attendees alike.

Festivals and Cultural Celebrations Ahead

The Duaw Davao Festival in June and the iconic Kadayawan Festival in August are expected to push arrivals even higher. Duaw Davao has been designed as a summer celebration, featuring art walks through Poblacion, film screenings at the Cinematheque, and a nationwide cheerdance competition at the Davao City Recreation Center. These curated activities invite both locals and tourists to explore the city’s creative soul.

Kadayawan, the city’s crown jewel, remains a massive draw. Preparations are underway to showcase indigenous culture, bountiful harvests, and street dancing. Combined with the Fête de la Musique partnership, the festival calendar transforms Davao into a continuous celebration, spreading economic benefits across hotels, restaurants, and small vendors.

Earthquake Adjustments and Safety First

The June 8 earthquake that shook parts of Mindanao had a limited but noticeable impact on Davao’s event timeline. Some Duaw Davao activities were rescheduled to allow structural inspections and safety assessments of venues. The City Engineer’s Office and building officials coordinated clearance procedures to ensure all locations meet safety standards.

Despite these adjustments, tourism activity remained resilient. No significant reversal of the growth trend was recorded, and full programming is expected to resume once approvals are completed. The careful calibration of venues demonstrates the city’s commitment to visitor safety without sacrificing its cultural momentum.

Digital Innovation with Smart JAMP

Davao is poised to launch a digital tourism passport in August 2026, developed with assistance from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism under the Smart JAMP program. The mobile application will use NFC technology to provide real-time access to promotions, packages, and participating establishments, streamlining the visitor experience.

The platform will sync with the upcoming Davao Bus Project, integrating 1,100 buses and multi-modal links to taxis and habal-habal for seamless last-mile travel. This digital transformation modernizes destination marketing and sets a benchmark for smart tourism in the Philippines, further strengthening Davao’s appeal as a forward-looking urban destination.
