SURIGAO CITY — Just a 15- to 20-minute boat ride from Surigao City's port lies Kabo Island, also known as Kabusgan Island. This small, 23.4-hectare island remains largely undeveloped and is privately owned. With its crystal-clear waters, fine white sand beaches, lush greenery, six spring water sources, and surrounding mangroves, it offers a truly raw and untouched island experience.

A Private Island with Untouched Beauty

Kabo Island lies approximately 4.8 kilometers eastward across the bay from Surigao City. The island is irregular in shape, elongated along a northeast-southwest line, and rises to an elevation of 33.5 meters. It is administratively part of Barangay Day-asan, Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, within the Caraga Region. The island is owned by the Calderon family. Its natural vegetation includes coconut trees and pineapples, and the island provides a simple livelihood to caretakers who yield fruits used for charcoal making and copra production. Because the island is privately owned, access is not automatic. Visitors should secure prior permission from the owners or caretakers before planning a trip, as it is not a commercial public resort.

A Pristine Island Experience

The island's main attractions are its pristine, unnamed stretches of fine white sand and crystal-clear waters. Please note that while some local records may reference these as 'Birok Beach,' these are not commercial facilities but raw, natural shorelines. The surrounding mangroves form a brackish intermediate zone on the shore side, while the Hintuan Passage side has a clear-cut shoreline. Nearby features include Kabo Reef to the north and Load Island to the south. The island's six spring water sources provide fresh water, adding to its self-sustaining charm. Currently, the island remains undeveloped, so visitors should not expect resort amenities such as restaurants, restrooms, tour guides, or other commercial services on-site. The experience is purely about enjoying nature in its raw state.

What Visitors Can Experience

Kabo Island offers a truly secluded and peaceful escape. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters, exploring the white sand beaches, and relaxing in the lush, natural surroundings. The island's undeveloped state allows visitors to experience nature in its purest form, away from the crowds of more commercialized destinations. The island also has potential for development as a beach resort, adventure island, or farm, though any future development would depend on the owners' plans.

How to Get There

Kabo Island is accessible by a short 15- to 20-minute boat ride from Surigao City's port. Visitors can arrange boat transfers through local tour operators or at the port. The island is located approximately 4.8 kilometers eastward across the bay from Surigao City. Its proximity to the city makes it an easy and convenient day-trip destination for those seeking a quick escape to a secluded island paradise. Visitors are advised to coordinate with the property owners or caretakers in advance to ensure access and avoid any issues with trespassing.
