Philippines — Tourism remained a formidable pillar of the Philippine economy in 2025, contributing a staggering P2.27 trillion to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP). Despite a slight 1.4 percent decline in total tourism direct gross value added compared to the previous year, the sector accounted for 8.1 percent of the country's total economic output. The resilience of the industry was bolstered by a significant rise in domestic tourism spending, which climbed to P3.26 trillion, and a robust expansion in employment opportunities within the sector. These figures underscore the industry's critical role as a major driver of national growth and a key source of livelihood for millions of Filipinos.
Robust Employment and Domestic Spending
A highlight of the 2025 data is the sector’s impressive performance in job creation, with the Philippine Statistics Authority reporting that 7.70 million individuals worked in tourism-related industries—a 2.5 percent increase from the previous year. This employment figure accounts for 15.7 percent of the national workforce, effectively exceeding pre-pandemic levels and signaling a successful trajectory for industry recovery. While inbound international spending faced challenges with a 6.4 percent decline to P698.46 billion, the growth in outbound and domestic tourism expenditures helped balance the industry's overall internal tourism expenditure, which rose to P3.96 trillion.
The Path Forward for Global Recovery
As the Philippines navigates the post-pandemic landscape, the tourism sector continues to adapt through the Philippine Tourism Satellite Account framework, which tracks the industry's evolving contribution to the national economy. While international arrivals are recovering at a slower pace than domestic movement, the sustained interest in Philippine destinations and the growth in professional opportunities within the sector provide a stable foundation for the future. By maintaining its focus on diverse spending categories and leveraging domestic travel strength, the industry is well-positioned to remain a cornerstone of national development and a vital provider of stable, long-term employment.
