As Holy Week travelers begin their exodus from the city, the local government of Samboan has officially launched a "Safe & Sacred" tourism campaign, positioning the southern "People's Paradise" as the premier destination for eco-conscious and peaceful retreats.
While the northern beaches of Cebu often grab the headlines, the southern municipality of Samboan is making a strategic play for the "peace and quiet" traveler this April. In a newly released advisory, the local government has urged guests to observe strict safety regulations while enjoying the town’s famous waterfall circuits and the National Historical Commission-protected heritage sites. Positioned as the "People's Paradise," Samboan is leaning into its "laid-back, province vibe" to attract families and solo travelers who are looking to escape the loud, commercialized crowds of traditional summer hotspots. The goal for 2026 is clear: to offer a "meaningful and safe" Holy Week experience that prioritizes nature over noise.
This move is part of a broader "Value-Driven Tourism" trend highlighted by the Department of Tourism (DOT) this week. Amidst rising fuel costs and global travel uncertainties, the DOT is encouraging tourists to explore "community-based" and "nature-centric" destinations like Samboan. Local officials have deployed additional safety personnel and tourism marshals to ensure that the influx of travelers does not compromise the integrity of the town's eco-sensitive areas. By promoting walking tours and farm visits alongside their iconic falls, Samboan is setting the gold standard for how rural municipalities can balance high-volume seasonal tourism with long-term environmental and cultural preservation.
