A Push for International Connectivity
Efforts are underway to extend the runway of Bacolod-Silay Airport by an additional 500 meters as part of a plan to attract international flights to Negros Occidental. Representative Javier Miguel Benitez said the project has gained support from transportation officials and is expected to improve the airport’s ability to serve larger aircraft and future international routes. The proposal aims to strengthen the province’s connection to global markets while creating more opportunities for tourism and business investments.
Supporting Tourism and Economic Development
Local officials believe the runway expansion could play a major role in boosting the region’s economy. By opening the door to international air travel, Negros Occidental hopes to attract more visitors, investors, and business activities. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson noted that the upgraded airport would complement other major projects, including the planned Negros Occidental Convention Center, which is expected to host large-scale events and conferences in the future.
Modernizing the Airport for Future Growth
Aside from the proposed runway extension, the airport is also set to benefit from ongoing infrastructure improvements. The Department of Transportation has allocated funding for the expansion of the passenger terminal building, which is expected to increase the airport’s capacity from 500 to 1,500 passengers. Officials see these developments as important steps toward transforming Bacolod-Silay Airport into a more competitive gateway that can support the growing needs of travelers and businesses across the region.
