MAKATI CITY — Vaccination is not only important during childhood. Adults, particularly those aged 50 and older, also benefit greatly from staying up to date with recommended immunizations to safeguard their health and help protect those around them. As people age, the immune system gradually becomes less effective, increasing susceptibility to serious diseases that can result in hospitalization, long-term complications, or even death. To help older adults remain healthy and reduce the risk of infectious diseases, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) has identified five key vaccines that should be considered by individuals in their 50s and beyond.
The Five Recommended Vaccines for Older Adults
MakatiMed advises older adults to prioritize five important vaccines as part of their preventive healthcare routine. Among them is the annual flu vaccine, which is ideally administered between February and June, ahead of the Philippines’ flu season that typically runs from June to November. Seniors are more likely to experience severe influenza-related complications, including pneumonia and the worsening of existing conditions such as asthma and heart disease. Another important immunization is the RSV vaccine, which helps protect against the respiratory syncytial virus. This virus can lead to serious respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, asthma exacerbations, and middle ear infections. The pneumococcal vaccine is likewise recommended for adults aged 50 and above, particularly those with weakened immune systems. For otherwise healthy seniors aged 65 and older, healthcare experts recommend either a single dose of PCV20 or a PCV15 vaccination followed by PPSV23.
MakatiMed also highlights the importance of the shingles vaccine, which is administered in two doses. It provides nearly 100% protection against the varicella-zoster virus and continues to offer approximately 85% protection even four years after vaccination. Completing the list is the Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), which adults should receive every 10 years. Because tetanus-causing bacteria are commonly found in soil, dirt, and animal manure, booster shots are particularly important for people who garden, farm, or frequently engage in outdoor activities.
Why Vaccinations Matter for Older Adults
“Vaccines were created to help you build resistance against illnesses that could land you in the hospital, render you disabled, or threaten your life,” explains Dr. Ryan Raymond Y. Bautista of Makati Medical Center. “As we grow older, our immune system weakens, whether due to age or diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorders, and HIV. Vaccinations not only protect us; they protect others too by preventing the spread of contagious viral and bacterial infections.” Maintaining an updated vaccination schedule can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe illness among older adults. It also helps preserve overall well-being, allowing individuals to continue enjoying active and meaningful time with family and friends. Those seeking additional information about recommended vaccines and vaccination services are encouraged to consult Makati Medical Center or a trusted healthcare professional.
