MAKATI CITY — The Rotary Club of Makati (RC Makati) honored some of the country’s most inspiring young changemakers during the second Paing Hechanova Youth Leadership Awards (PHYLA), held on Friday night, January 30, 2026, at the Manila Polo Club. As one of the club’s flagship initiatives, the awards celebrated 10 exceptional young Filipino leaders from the country’s 10 Rotary districts who are leading impactful community projects focused on education, environmental advocacy, food security, social enterprise, and other meaningful causes.
A total of 10 finalists were selected from 84 nominees nationwide and recognized for their dedication to leadership and service. Among the awardees were Shawntel Nicole Nieto, co-founder of Sustainability PH, who received the grand prize; Coleen Awit, founder of Sagup Negros, named first runner-up; and Ralph Eric F. Bernardo, founder of Tayo ang Kalikasan, along with several other youth leaders. All finalists received cash prizes and joined a two-day leadership boot camp aimed at strengthening their ability to create positive community impact.
Honoring Excellence in Sports
In addition to recognizing youth leaders, the Rotary Club of Makati also presented Youth Sports Personality Awards to tennis star Alex Eala and Olympian swimmer Kayla Sanchez, both of whom sent video messages expressing gratitude for the recognition.
Alex Eala was honored after capturing her first WTA 125 title and delivering the Philippines’ first SEA Games women’s singles tennis gold medal since 1999. Meanwhile, Kayla Sanchez, recognized as the most medal-winning Filipino athlete during the 2025 SEA Games, was likewise acknowledged for her achievements. Each athlete received 100,000 peso to support their continued athletic development. Organized in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the awards highlighted the importance of investing in sports as a contributor to economic growth, tourism, and national pride.
Developing Future Leaders in Makati
Eddie Galvez, President of the Rotary Club of Makati, emphasized the national reach of the awards and the diverse advocacies represented by the finalists. “There were over a hundred applicants, but 85 were officially nominated. We shortlisted them down to 10,” he shared, adding that the dedication shown by the participants gives hope that they will become catalysts for positive change. PHYLA Chairman Sid Garcia also noted that the initiative aims to develop not only leadership skills but also integrity and a commitment to nation-building.
By holding the ceremony in Makati, the Rotary Club of Makati further reinforced the city’s role as a center for leadership development, talent cultivation, and workforce preparation. The honorees, from community advocates to elite athletes, represent the next generation of Filipino professionals, innovators, and leaders who are expected to contribute to the country’s economic and social progress.
