PALAWAN — The quest for the next generation of Philippine tennis stars is intensifying as the Palawan Juniors Tennis Series officially shifts its focus to the Visayas. Following a highly successful opener in Mindanao, the nationwide grassroots circuit is set to bring high-level, competitive action to Cebu, providing a crucial platform for aspiring young netters to hone their skills and climb the national rankings. Spearheaded by Palawan Pawnshop president and CEO Bobby Castro, this long-term development program remains a cornerstone of local sports, dedicated to breaking down geographic barriers by bringing professional-grade tournaments closer to players across the country.
A Nationwide Circuit for Regional Talent
The upcoming Visayas swing promises an action-packed schedule, beginning with a Group 2 tournament at the City of Naga Tennis Courts from July 9 to 14. The momentum continues with the third leg at the Villa Aurora Tennis Courts in Pardo, Cebu City, from July 16 to 21, before concluding the circuit at the Mandaue Tennis Courts from July 23 to 28. These events are sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) and the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) platform, ensuring that every match counts toward an athlete’s official standing. By providing this consistent, high-level environment, the series eliminates the heavy burden of travel costs previously required for regional talents to compete in Manila, effectively democratizing access to professional tennis development.
Building a Pipeline for Future World-Class Players
Beyond the trophies and medals, the Palawan series is meticulously designed to widen the competitive base of Philippine tennis. The tournament features a comprehensive range of categories, including boys' and girls' singles for the 12, 14, 16, and 18 and under divisions, as well as doubles competitions for the 14 and 18 and under age groups. By fostering a culture of regular competition, the initiative helps identify promising talents early, ensuring a steady pipeline of players who are prepared to advance to the national pool and eventually compete on the international stage. As the Palawan Group of Companies continues its partnership with ICON Golf and Sports and Dunlop, this collective effort underscores a profound commitment to investing in the holistic wellness and athletic future of Filipino youth.
