MAKATI CITY — Perched at the edge of Ayala Triangle Gardens, Blackbird at the Nielson Tower stands as one of Makati's most iconic dining destinations. Housed within the historic Nielson Tower, Manila's first major commercial aviation terminal built in 1937, this art-deco restaurant offers a stunning black-and-white architectural backdrop that transports guests to a bygone era of aviation glamour . Since its opening, Blackbird has become a go-to fine dining institution, earning a MICHELIN Selected distinction in the MICHELIN Guide Manila & Environs, alongside multiple Tatler Best 20 Restaurants Philippines awards for its refined international cuisine and world-class service .
A Rich Aviation Legacy Preserved in Art Deco Splendor
The Nielson Tower was originally built by Laurie Reuben Nielson as the terminal and control tower for Manila's first commercial airport. What are now Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas were once the runways. When Philippine Air Lines Inc. was established in 1941, its historic maiden flight departed from this very site on March 15 of that year . The airport ceased operations in 1948 when PAL relocated to Pasay City, leaving the land to be returned to Ayala and Cia. The passenger terminal and control tower were meticulously preserved and remain the only pre-World War II structures standing in Makati today .
A Culinary Journey Across Continents
Led by Scottish chef-restaurateur Colin Mackay and overseen by chef Kerwin Go, Blackbird's eclectic menu blends refined world classics with contemporary Asian cuisine. The MICHELIN Guide praises the establishment for serving "global classics from West to East," where unlisted daily specials, like decadent Wagyu croquettes or a rich mussaman curry, add an element of surprise to the dining experience . Signature dishes include the Prawn Scotch Eggs, the Blackbird Seafood Platter, and the Mulwarra Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin. Guests also recommend the Spiced Lamb Ribs, Blackbird Burger, and Calamansi Tart for dessert .
Spaces Designed for Every Occasion
The restaurant offers multiple distinct spaces within the historic tower. The stunning main oval dining room fills with light during the day, while evening brings a sense of elegance and glamour with its Art Deco features highlighted by soft mood lighting. A dramatic spiral staircase leads guests to The Cabin, the former control tower offering intimate private dining with stunning views of Ayala Triangle Gardens. The Garden & Terrace features an open wooden deck and covered terrace at the rear of the building, ideal for al fresco dining. The Lounge & Bar, appointed with elegant brass details and Eramosa marble, hosts a daily aperitivo hour from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM featuring complimentary savory bites .
