Bohol — Runners will lace up before dawn on July 19, 2026, for the Sandugo Tigi Calamay Run Half Marathon, a race that blends endurance with the coastal charm of Bohol’s “Calamay Country.” The course starts at the Jagna Baywalk, set against the Bohol Island Geopark.

A Scenic Route at the Break of Dawn

Gun start is at three in the morning, giving participants a rare opportunity to run under a canopy of stars that gradually gives way to sunrise over the Bohol Sea. The 21‑kilometer route winds through Jagna’s coastal roads, offering panoramic views of the island’s southeastern shoreline. Cool sea breezes and the soft sound of waves accompany every stride.

The early start is designed to beat the tropical heat, ensuring athletes can push their limits safely. Runners will pass by local fishing communities, centuries‑old churches, and stretches of coconut‑lined roads. The course showcases the quiet beauty of a municipality less traveled by typical tourists, inviting visitors to discover a new side of Bohol.

Running for Heritage and Community

The Calamay Run is part of the larger Sandugo Festival, a celebration that commemorates the historic 1565 blood compact between Datu Sikatuna and Miguel López de Legazpi. This event falls under the “Tigi” stream, which highlights sports and youth activities. It channels the festival’s vibrant energy into a healthy, inclusive competition.

Proceeds from the race support local youth development programs managed by the Provincial Youth Development Office. Participants contribute directly to community building while enjoying a world‑class sporting experience. The event draws both serious runners and casual joggers, fostering camaraderie across age groups and backgrounds.

The Sweet Taste of Jagna

Jagna is widely regarded as the home of calamay, the sticky rice delicacy cooked in coconut milk and brown sugar, traditionally sold in halved coconut shells. The marathon celebrates this culinary icon, and finishers can expect a taste of the town’s signature sweet. Local vendors will line the Baywalk, offering freshly made calamay and other native treats.

Beyond the race, visitors can explore Jagna’s public market, where rows of neatly stacked calamay shells attract food‑loving tourists. The town’s connection to this delicacy runs deep, with generations of families perfecting the recipe. The marathon serves as a delicious introduction to the culture and flavors of southeastern Bohol.

A Streamlined but Spirited Festival

The 2026 Sandugo Festival has been streamlined in response to El Niño and energy conservation efforts, focusing on quality over quantity. Organizers are concentrating resources on high‑impact events that maximize participation while minimizing environmental footprint. The Calamay Run exemplifies this approach by using existing municipal infrastructure and natural scenery.

Despite the scaled‑down celebrations, the spirit remains robust. Governor Aris Aumentado emphasized the importance of sustaining cultural and sporting activities that bring communities together. The marathon serves as a testament to Bohol’s resilience and commitment to holistic tourism, blending athleticism, heritage, and environmental stewardship.

Registration and Preparation

Interested participants can register through the PaceNode online portal. Slots are limited, and early registration is encouraged to secure a race kit and finisher’s medal. Organizers recommend that runners arrive in Jagna the day before to acclimatize and explore the town’s attractions, including the scenic Jagna Baywalk itself.

Accommodations range from cozy inns near the town center to beachfront resorts offering spectacular sunrise views. Local officials have coordinated with transport operators to ensure smooth access to the race venue. For anyone seeking a unique race experience outside the usual tourist circuits, the Calamay Run promises an unforgettable adventure.
