ILOILO CITY — Iloilo City has secured its fourth consecutive Gold Award for excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, a distinction that speaks directly to travelers seeking safe, well‑governed destinations. The Office of Civil Defense Region VI and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council VI conferred the honor during a ceremony at the Iloilo Grand Hotel on April 28, 2026. Civil Defense Administrator USEC Harold N. Cabreros and OCD VI Regional Director Raul E. Fernandez led the awarding. Governor Arthur R. Defensor Jr. graced the occasion as the host province's chief executive.

The city's DRRM Officer Donna Magno received the award, which recognized sustained efforts in disaster drills, early warning systems, pre‑emptive evacuation protocols, and the strengthened City Emergency Operations Center. For the tourism sector, these systems mean something immediate: a city that can detect danger early, evacuate efficiently, and coordinate emergency response is a city where visitors can travel with peace of mind. The Gold Award is not a ceremonial citation; it is an independently audited assessment of a city's ability to protect lives.

Why a DRRM Award Matters to the Traveler

Disaster preparedness is increasingly a factor in destination decisions. International tour operators, MICE organizers, and individual travelers screen for safety infrastructure alongside hotel ratings and flight connectivity. Iloilo's fourth consecutive Gold Award signals that the city's emergency systems are not a one‑time achievement but an institutionalized practice. Regular citywide and barangay‑level drills ensure that both residents and visitors know where to go and what to do when warnings sound.

The strengthened City Emergency Operations Center functions as the nerve center for faster coordination and response. In practical terms, this means that during a typhoon or earthquake, a tourist in a Mandurriao hotel or a delegate at the Iloilo Convention Center benefits from the same rapid‑response architecture that protects Ilonggo families. The award validates that Iloilo's reputation for safety is not anecdotal but verified by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

A Safe City, A Stronger Destination

The Gold Award adds a critical layer to Iloilo's tourism portfolio. The city already holds two ASEAN Clean Tourist City awards, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation, and a UNEP Role Model City citation. Each credential strengthens the city's brand, but the DRRM award addresses a more fundamental concern: the physical safety of everyone within its borders.

Governor Defensor's presence at the ceremony underscored the province‑wide coordination that supports the city's resilience. Iloilo's approach to disaster preparedness integrates national, regional, and local agencies into a single operational framework. For the visitor, the award confirms that the city's beauty and cuisine are backed by systems that work when they are needed most.
