Davao Oriental — The shoreline of Manggihay came alive on June 25, 2026, as hundreds of provincial employees, volunteers, and partner agencies gathered for ZumbaSura 2026, a one‑of‑a‑kind event that fused high‑energy dance fitness with a coastal cleanup. The celebration marked the province’s 59th Araw and National Environment Day while reinforcing Davao Oriental’s image as a destination where wellness and environmental care go hand in hand.

A Unique Fusion of Fitness and Cleanup

Participants kicked off the morning with a 45‑minute Zumba session right on the beach, moving to infectious Latin and pop beats as the sun rose over the Pacific. The music pumped energy into the crowd, turning an ordinary cleanup into a festive, healthy gathering. Organizers designed the experience to prove that caring for nature can be joyful rather than tedious.

Once the dance portion ended, volunteers grabbed sacks and gloves and fanned out across the shoreline. They collected plastic wrappers, abandoned fishing gear, and other residual waste that had washed ashore. The combination of exercise and environmental action drew more participants than a traditional cleanup, creating a model for community engagement.

Celebrating 59 Years with a Purpose

ZumbaSura served as the opening salvo for the week‑long anniversary festivities leading to July 1, the province’s official founding day. The event set a tone of shared responsibility and pride in the region’s natural assets. By kicking off the celebration with an act of stewardship, the province sent a clear message about its values.

The timing also aligned perfectly with World Environment Month, observed across the Philippines every June. Holding the cleanup on National Environment Day allowed the province to connect local pride with a nationwide ecological movement. Davao Oriental has long been recognized for its environmental policies, and ZumbaSura reinforced that legacy in a lively, visible way.

Protecting the Shores for Tourism

Davao Oriental’s tourism appeal rests heavily on its pristine coastlines, from the surfing mecca of Dahican Beach to the hidden coves of Mati. Events like ZumbaSura directly protect the scenery that draws visitors year‑round. A clean shoreline is not just an environmental victory but an economic one, as tourists seek unspoiled beaches and vibrant marine life.

The province’s 10‑year Solid Waste Management Plan, approved by national authorities, provides the policy backbone for such grassroots efforts. Local officials understand that protecting the environment is inseparable from promoting tourism. ZumbaSura showed that policy can be translated into action with laughter, music, and community spirit.

Community Spirit in Action

Provincial government employees worked side‑by‑side with members of partner agencies and ordinary residents, breaking down hierarchies in the sand. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie, with families and youth joining the cleanup after the dance. This inclusivity is a hallmark of Davao Oriental’s approach to civic engagement.

The portmanteau “ZumbaSura” itself—a blend of Zumba and basura—captures the event’s clever appeal. It makes an otherwise mundane chore feel trendy and fun, encouraging wider participation. The success of this year’s edition paves the way for an annual tradition that can grow in scope and reach.

A Green Prelude to the Araw Festivities

Following ZumbaSura, the province is set to launch the INALIMA Agri‑Trade, Tourism, and Creative Fair 2026 at Capitol Park in Mati City. The fair, running from June 26 to July 1, showcases the province’s agricultural bounty, cultural creativity, and tourism offerings. ZumbaSura provided the perfect prelude, grounding the celebration in the very landscapes that the fair aims to promote.

The shoreline of Manggihay now stands a little cleaner, and the community a little closer. For Davao Oriental, the 59th Araw is not just a milestone but a reaffirmation of its identity as a province that values both its people and its natural heritage. Visitors are invited to experience this spirit firsthand—whether on the dance floor or along the pristine coast.
