MATI CITY, Davao Oriental — The province celebrated its most valuable resource—its people—with the inaugural Gawad Oriental Davaoeño on July 1, 2026. The new recognition program honored 119 individuals and organizations whose excellence has elevated the name of Davao Oriental far beyond its borders.
A Milestone Celebration of Human Capital
Governor Nelson L. Dayanghirang spearheaded the launch of the award as the centerpiece of the 59th Araw ng Davao Oriental. The event shifted the narrative of provincial wealth from natural resources and infrastructure to the talent, resilience, and dedication of its citizens. The ceremony shone a spotlight on the everyday heroes and extraordinary achievers who shape the province’s identity.
The recognition covered a remarkable breadth of fields. Academic achievers stood alongside community volunteers, while farmers, fisherfolk, and entrepreneurs shared the stage with artists and athletes. The diversity of awardees painted a vivid portrait of a province rich in human potential, each story a testament to the power of purpose and perseverance.
Eleven Fields of Excellence Recognized
The 119 awardees were drawn from eleven distinct categories, ensuring no sector was overlooked. Academic excellence was celebrated, honoring top-performing students and dedicated educators who have mentored generations. Professional and non-professional achievers were also recognized for milestones that have brought honor to their communities.
Uniformed service personnel received accolades for their bravery and commitment to public safety. Youth leaders were highlighted for their role in community development, while sports excellence awards celebrated athletes who have put Davao Oriental on the national athletic map. The arts, culture, and tourism sector was recognized for preserving and promoting the unique heritage of the province.
Additional categories included innovation and research, environmental stewardship, and special provincial recognition for acts of heroism. Lifetime achievement awards were reserved for individuals who have dedicated their entire lives to the welfare of Davao Oriental. This comprehensive selection process ensured that every meaningful contribution was acknowledged.
Tangible Gratitude and Lasting Legacy
Each awardee received a commemorative plaque engraved with their name and achievement, along with an official Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution permanently enshrining their contributions into the province’s legislative archives. A ₱5,000 cash incentive was also given as a direct gesture of appreciation from the provincial government.
These tangible tokens were symbols of a deeper message: the province sees its people, values their work, and is willing to invest in their recognition. The plaques and resolutions will serve as permanent reminders that excellence does not go unnoticed in Davao Oriental. The cash incentive, while modest, reinforced the sincerity of the government’s gratitude.
A Tradition Rooted in Resilience
The Gawad Oriental Davaoeño was held under the anniversary theme “Duyog sa Pagbangon, Kusog sa Paglambo” — Together in Recovery, Strength in Growth. The theme captured the province’s journey of overcoming challenges and emerging stronger. The award ceremony was the culmination of a month-long celebration that included sports festivals, cultural events, and environmental activities.
By institutionalizing this recognition program, the provincial government has planted a seed for a lasting tradition. Future generations will grow up knowing that their province celebrates its heroes not just with words but with formal, enduring honors. The inaugural Gawad Oriental Davaoeño has set a powerful precedent: in Davao Oriental, the greatest investment is, and always will be, its people.
