The primary narrative for April 2026 is "Cebu on the World Stage." The province recently concluded its hosting of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in January, where President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and ASEAN ministers gathered at the Mactan Shrine to set the region’s 2030 tourism roadmap. This high-profile exposure has fueled a "Summit Momentum," with the 11th International Travel Festival (ITF) held last month seeing record participation from over 100 global exhibitors. Governor Pamela Baricuatro is leveraging this visibility to pivot Cebu’s economy from being purely tourism-dependent to becoming a diversified hub for trade and international conventions.
The physical centerpiece of this shift is the SM Seaside Arena, scheduled to open its doors this June. Located within the massive SM Seaside complex at the South Road Properties (SRP), the arena is designed to host everything from international concerts to PBA games and global conventions. This facility, combined with the SMX Convention Center Cebu—now the largest of its kind in the country—is creating a new economic gravity in the SRP corridor. For the tourism sector, this means a shift toward "higher-yield" visitors; international delegates attending events in Cebu are projected to spend three times more than the average leisure tourist, providing a massive boost to local hospitality, retail, and transportation services.
