Bohol — The Provincial Government of Bohol welcomed Emma Paola Gutierrez Alvarado, representative of internationally renowned designer Patti Carpenter, and Pinky Valero of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) during a courtesy visit at the Capitol on June 29, 2026. Their visit marks the start of a program to elevate Boholano handmade products for the global stage.

A Gateway for Local Artisans

The delegation was received by Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, Legal Officer Atty. Handel Lagunay, Chief of Staff Atty. Filipina Asoy‑Piollo, BEDIPO Head Maria Fe Dominise, and BCCAD OIC Head Emerson Pinos. The meeting set the tone for a collaboration that will bring Bohol’s finest crafts closer to international buyers. The presence of multiple department heads underscored the Capitol’s serious commitment to the creative economy.

The visit launched the Manila FAME 2026 Artisan Village Program in Bohol, designed to provide product assessment, design refinement, and market preparation for local craftsmen. Patti Carpenter’s expertise in global design trends will guide artisans in making their products more competitive for export. The initiative promises to turn homegrown skills into sustainable livelihoods.

Assessments Begin with Weavers and Crafters

The formal assessment of artisans commenced immediately with the Tubigon Loomweavers Multipurpose Cooperative and the Antequera Display Center. These groups represent Bohol’s rich tradition of weaving and native crafts, which have been passed down through generations. International design guidance aims to transform these heritage products into contemporary pieces desired by overseas markets.

In the coming days, eleven more artisan enterprises will undergo similar evaluations. These include Maajo Leather Works, ArtDiary by JazzRey Art Services, Mara & Aram Baglines, BamBohol, P1 Handicrafts, R & G Shells Trading, Te Amo Catalina Handicrafts, Let’s Go Natural Souvenir Shop, Crissander Enterprises, and Prime of Asia Handicrafts. Each brings a distinct flavor of Boholano creativity, from leather goods to eco‑friendly souvenirs.

Elevating Heritage: Asin Tibuok Takes Center Stage

The program will also support the refinement of Tan‑inong Asin Tibuok and KASAMA Asin Tibuok, two brands of Bohol’s artisanal sea salt. Asin Tibuok, with its unique dinosaur‑egg shape and smoky flavor, has already gained international attention but requires market‑ready packaging and storytelling. The assessment aims to polish this culturally significant product for upscale global markets without losing its heritage.

This salt, painstakingly crafted by coastal communities for centuries, represents the essence of Boholano ingenuity. Integrating it into the Manila FAME program ensures that culinary heritage gets the same attention as home décor and fashion. The initiative aligns with the province’s vision of preserving tradition while embracing modern commerce.

A Creative Economy Anchored in the Geopark

Bohol, as the Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, has a unique advantage in linking its natural wonders with its creative industries. Tourists are increasingly seeking authentic, locally made souvenirs, and this program ensures that what they buy reflects genuine Boholano artistry. By enhancing product quality and design, the province strengthens its brand as a destination for both nature and culture.

The collaboration with CITEM and international designers prepares local artisans for Manila FAME 2026: Bloom, scheduled from October 15 to 17 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila. That event will showcase export‑ready home décor, furnishings, fashion, and lifestyle products. Participation will open doors to national and international buyers, generating income for countless families across the province.
