The provincial government of Bohol has applied for Geographical Indication status for Ubi kinampay to legally protect its heritage and unique quality as the province’s premium purple yam variety.

Bohol — In a landmark effort to preserve the agricultural heritage of the province, the provincial government of Bohol has formally applied for Geographical Indication (GI) protection for its iconic Ubi kinampay. Known as the "Queen of Philippine Yams," this prized purple yam variety is deeply woven into the local culture, history, and economy. By seeking legal recognition from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Bohol aims to safeguard the authenticity of its flagship crop and ensure that the reputation of this premium product remains exclusively linked to the province’s unique soil, climate, and traditional farming practices.

A Product of Place and Tradition

The unique characteristics of Ubi kinampay—specifically its rich flavor, distinct fragrance, smooth texture, and vibrant purple hue—are not accidental; they are the result of Bohol’s specific natural environment and generations of careful cultivation. As a Geofood product of Bohol, the country’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, the yam has gained national and international acclaim as a premier ingredient in various culinary applications. Geographical Indication protection serves as a critical tool for Bohol, as it legally identifies a product whose quality and reputation are fundamentally linked to its place of origin. Once granted, this status will ensure that only authentic Ubi kinampay produced within the province and meeting strict quality standards can carry the Bohol name, preventing the market from being flooded by misidentified imitations.

Empowering Local Farmers and Producers

The GI application process involves a rigorous evaluation by the IPOPHL, requiring technical documentation that covers cultivation methods, production areas, labeling standards, and evidence of the crop’s deep historical ties to the region. This initiative is the culmination of years of investment by the provincial government in improving production systems, supporting local growers, and promoting sustainable agricultural development. If the application is successful, Ubi kinampay will follow in the footsteps of Bohol’s renowned Asin Tibuok as a protected heritage product. Ultimately, this move is designed to boost consumer trust, strengthen the market position of local farmers, and solidify Bohol’s standing as a global destination for heritage food products, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from this vibrant agricultural treasure.
