TAGBILARAN CITY, BOHOL — Bohol's student-athletes delivered a historic performance at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, helping Region VII–Central Visayas claim fourth place overall in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. The province contributed six gold, six silver, and seven bronze medals to the regional tally, a feat that officials describe as the result of years of sustained investment in grassroots sports development.

The standout story belongs to Jhul Ian Cañalita of Tabuan National High School in Garcia‑Hernandez. The 18‑year‑old runner captured gold in both the 5,000‑meter run and the 3,000‑meter steeplechase, setting new Palarong Pambansa records in each event. His steeplechase time of 9:11.40 shattered his own 2025 record by over twelve seconds, while his 5,000‑meter clocking of 15:15.22 also broke his previous mark.

Golden Performances Across Multiple Disciplines

Cañalita was not alone on the podium. Gwen Diaz of Mater Dei College–Tubigon soared to gold in the secondary girls' high jump, clearing 1.65 meters. After two previous Palaro campaigns that ended with a bronze, Diaz finally claimed the top prize. "Kapoy kaayo sa training. Patay mi sa training. Nag‑prepare gyud mi sa Palarong Pambansa," she said, describing the grueling preparation behind her golden finish.

KC Mae Gamayon of Mayor Pablo O. Lim Memorial High School in Valencia dominated the secondary girls' pin weight category in arnis, winning her gold in full‑contact sparring. Kristina Concepcion Belano of Calape National High School contributed two gold medals in chess, powering Central Visayas to victories in both the blitz and standard team events. Justin Madelo of Garcia‑Hernandez added another gold in the elementary boys' 2,000‑meter walkathon.

A Province That Invests in Champions

Provincial Youth Development Office head Metodio Maraguinot Jr. framed the achievement as the product of deliberate, long‑term investment. "It really takes a whole province to raise a champion," he said, emphasizing that producing elite athletes requires qualified coaches, appropriate facilities, and a comprehensive ecosystem that nurtures talent from the grassroots.

The Provincial Government, under Governor Aris Aumentado, funded a 30‑day centralized training camp for the delegation and provided financial assistance through the Special Education Fund. Each of the 161 delegation members—including 132 athletes, 23 coaches, and six volunteer trainers—received ₱4,500 in support. The province continues to expand its sports programs, including the "One Sport, One Town" initiative, barangay sports clinics, and scholarship reforms.

Bohol's medal haul reflects a broader commitment to youth development under the province's Strategic Governance Roadmap. As officials renewed their pledge to create more opportunities for young Bol‑anons, the record‑breaking performances in Agusan del Sur signaled that the province's sports program is delivering tangible results. The next target: higher‑level competitions and international representation.
